Mildred Sweeney

April 22, 1927 ~ March 16, 2024 (age 96) 96 Years Old

Tribute

Mildred (“Midge”) Alice Sweeney, of Kissimmee, Florida, born to Francis and Imelda Fournier on April 22, 1927, in Worcester, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her faithful daughters, at the age of 96, on Saturday, March 16, 2024.

Midge was predeceased by her devoted loving husband of 50 years, Richard (“Dick”) G. Sweeney; her treasured youngest son Richard (“Richie”) Sweeney Jr.; her precious daughter, Maureen Bonczek (née Sweeney), her dear son-in-law, Paul Gannon; her cherished brothers, Leonard and Richard Fournier; her adored sister, Rhea Brown (née Fournier); her beloved grandchild Eric Bonczek; and her darling great grandchild Hayley Rose.

As a girl, Midge was loved completely by her father, mother, brothers, sister, and friends. She was Class Historian of her graduating class at Worcester High School of Commerce in 1946; and shortly after graduation, she met and married the most handsome man of her dreams, with whom she shared and raised eight extraordinary children in Worcester Massachusetts. In addition to being a passionate, tender, caring, and dedicated mother, Midge was employed as a sales manager in retail, and an activities director and culinary specialist at the Beechhaven Nursing Home in Worcester, Massachusetts.

In 1986, Dick, Midge and Richie made their home in Kissimmee, Florida. Midge initially volunteered at what is now Osceola Hospital; but most will remember her as an outstanding pharmacy technician, a later in life career at which she excelled and immensely enjoyed. Midge retired from Osceola Hospital in 1997.

Midge was unwavering in her reverence to God Our Father, and a true, loyal, and faithful disciple of Our Holy Mother Mary. Until her passing, she remained an active member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kissimmee, Florida. She was a member of the Council of Catholic Women and Legion of Mary; she was a Eucharist Minister and a Minister of the Sick. She also wholly participated in bible study with Sister Ita.

Midge donned many titles throughout her 96 years, Daughter, Big Sister, Wife, Mom, Ma, Mummy, Aunt, Gram, Gramma, Grammie, Grammie-Florida, Gigi, but she truly needed no introduction. Standing barely 5 feet tall, with beautifully coiffed bleach blonde hair, she always shared a warm inviting movie-star smile that radiated a particular glow to her perfectly made-up face. Midge exhibited genuine compassion and comfort to everyone she met, but her willingness to listen, her true honesty, her steadfast integrity, and her readiness to appreciate, respect and love her family simply for who they are, can never be matched. She was, and will always remain, our fiery, fearless matriarch.

Midge is survived by her treasured son, Steven Sweeney of Sunnyvale, California; precious daughters: Patricia Prus (née Sweeney) and her husband David of Casnovia, Michigan, Catherine (“Katy”) Roberge (née Sweeney) and her husband Albert of Kissimmee, Florida; Joanne Gannon (née Sweeney) of Harwich Port, Massachusetts; Eileen Sweeney and her husband Michael Prus of Sturbridge, Massachusetts; Mary Hersee (née Sweeney) and her husband Wally of Sturbridge, Massachusetts; her dear son-in-law, John Bonczek of Uxbridge, Massachusetts, many nieces and nephews, twelve grandchildren, Amy, John, Mark, Jessica, Ryan, Paul, Julie, Justine, Colleen, Caitlin, Christine and Jennifer, nineteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Our family will receive friends on Thursday, March 21, 2024, from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at CONRAD & THOMPSON FUNERAL HOME, 511 Emmett Street, Kissimmee, Florida 34741; (407) 847-3188.
