Herbert “Herb” Leonard Mattson, 83, of Grand Rapids, MI, went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 13, 2018, in Kissimmee, FL. Herb was the last of seven children born in Kent City, MI, to Martha and Edward Mattson on September 10, 1934. After graduating from Kent City High he married his sweetheart, Bonnie Kramer, to whom he was faithfully devoted for the last 64 years. Together they had two children whom he cared for deeply. He was an excellent craftsman, inventor and entrepreneur. After completing his apprenticeship and working as a Tool and Die maker he started his own company, Mattson Tool & Die Corporation, which employed over 70 and provided high quality tools to many industries for 40 years. Outside of work he enjoyed woodworking, bowling, golf, boating, fishing and telling a good joke. Herb was a charter member of Northland Baptist Church where he sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and served as a deacon for many years. For the last 35 years he and his wife were part of Calvary Church.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie, their two children, Cheryl and Brenda; four grandchildren, Betsy (Kyle), Michael (Faith), Lindsey (Ross) and Cari (Jordan); two great grandchildren, Gwendolyn and Oliver; and his best friend Jack.
He is pre-deceased by his three brothers, Don, Paul and Lawrence, and three sisters, Doris, Evelyn and Iva.
A service commemorating his life will be held in the chapel at Calvary Church, 707 E. Beltline Avenue NE, Grand Rapids, MI, on May 18, 2018, at 3:00 p.m., preceded by Visitation at 2:00 p.m.
