Tribute

Nilda Cecilia Asido Sityar died peacefully on February 24, 2022 at Weatherwood Nursing Home in Wetherly, PA. Born on November 22, 1928 in Manila, Philippines as the fourth of six children by Macario Valandra Asido and Maria Magdalena Salgado Asido, she fled with her family to the mountains in Paete during the Japanese occupation in World War II. After the war, she studied accounting and took pride in working as an accountant even after marriage to the late Federico (Freddie) Sityar and motherhood. In 1967, she immigrated with her children to New York City, joined a year later by Freddie. They worked as civil service accountants for New York City, settled in Hollis, Queens, and then retired and moved to Kissimmee, Florida in 1992.

A devout Catholic, Nilda’s faith gave her courage to face life’s hardships while her war experiences led her to value frugality and a well-stocked pantry. Despite her full-time job and hour-long subway commutes, Nilda was a devoted and caring wife and mother. Her mathematical mind computed figures quickly and delighted in discovering number sequences and palindromes, playing word games, and telling puns. She enjoyed gardening, creating a wild and prolific garden teeming with fruit trees, vegetables, shrubs, and flowers.

Nilda is survived by her sister Lily Madrinan, her children Erwin (Christie Washburn), Irma, Emily (Tom Cornell) and Nick (Marivic Sustento), four grandchildren Alex, Lauren, Valerie, and Audrey, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Conrad & Thompson Funeral Home. A Service to Celebrate the Life of Nilda A. Sityar will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2022 at 10:00 A.M. in the Roger C. Thompson Memorial Chapel at Conrad & Thompson Funeral Home.
